Helpful Hints & Reminders
Following these simple tips will ensure that you have
an incredible mount for years to come.
-
Don’t leave it for tomorrow - take care of it as soon
as possible!
-
Upon death, specimen’s skin starts to decay. Freezing
specimen is best.
-
Don’t slit ear
-
Don’t slit throat
-
Don’t leave sit in sun or high heat
-
Don’t drag or hang deer by neck
-
Avoid shooting animal in head or neck
-
Don’t make any cuts along back of neck, just skin down
to head, leaving 4’ to 6’ of neck meat on from behind ears, cut neck off,
leaving whole skin connected to head intact.
-
Remember… more hide is always better than less.
-
If you can't get your trophy to taxidermist right away,
double plastic bag and freeze immediately. Also don’t leave in freezer
too long, freezer burn can take place in outer extremities (ears, nose,
eyes, lips, etc.)
-
If you can’t fit specimen in freezer:
-
Leave the cape in an open box. Do not use a plastic
bag if you are not freezing the specimen.
-
Try to get to taxidermist ASAP!
Before you bring your specimen in, attempt to follow
these simple guidelines for the best possible results:
Fish
Don’t
-
Leave it for tomorrow
-
Gut or clean out fish
-
Lay fish directly on ice (burns skin)
-
Wrap in newspaper
Do
-
Completely rinse fish off, including gills, body and mouth
with a damp cloth or towel.
-
Take a piece of cardboard and place around fish tail to
prevent curling while frozen.
-
Wrap fish and place in double plastic bag.
-
Freeze whole.
Birds
Don’t
-
Leave it for tomorrow
-
Clean or gut out
Do
-
Freeze specimen as soon as possible.
-
Wrap in double plastic bag and freeze
Small Mammals
Don’t
-
Leave till tomorrow
-
Clean or gut out
Do
-
Double plastic bag and freeze whole as soon as possible
Care & Cleaning of Your Mount
-
Wipe fish down with damp cloth
-
Keep mount out of direct sunlight
-
Keep mount away from direct heat sources such as fireplaces,
heaters, or heating vents.
-
Vacuum deer heads with the grain of hair, not against.
-
Make sure that mount is securely attached to wall, using
wood or metal stud.
-
Dust birds with feather duster or light air pressure going
with the feathers not against.
